What Was The Highlight Or Most Memorable Moment Of Your Tour

The most memorable moment of the tour was the optional excursion to visit Chernobyl. The tour was very extensive and also included a walking tour of the abandoned city of Pripyat - a very surreal place. Within the tour itself Crimea was very interesting. There were endless historical and military sites to visit. My favourite was the secret Soviet submarine base hidden within a mountain at Balaklava. It was like something from a James Bond film.

How Was Your Explore Tour Leader

The tour leader Katya was a very personable and knowledgeable guide. Everything ran pretty much like clockwork which is probably more difficult than it looks in Ukraine.

What Tips Would You Give To Someone Else Booking This Tour

Everything in Ukraine was much cheaper than I expected. Beer was £1 a pint. A box seat for the ballet in Odessa cost only £25. It is virtually impossible to buy or sell Ukrainian currency in the UK. ATMs were plentiful but don’t forget to tell your bank you are visiting Ukraine before you go.

Do You Have Anything Else To Add

Both Ukraine and Moldova far exceeded my expectations. Very few western tourists go there. Whilst English is not widely spoken finding good food and drink wasn’t a problem. The local guides employed during visits to sites / museums were invaluable unless you can read the Cyrillic alphabet!

What Was The Highlight Or Most Memorable Moment Of Your Tour

To choose one moment would be to deny many others - it was long a dream of mine to visit the Potemkin steps in Odessa, but to go to the opera there too and see the historic opera house as arranged by Kateryna was unforgettable, as indeed was going to Chekhov's house in Yalta, now safely restored and to see cherries hanging from his own cherry tree. The Scythian gold in Kiev was an unbelievable finale.

How Was Your Explore Tour Leader

We are normally independent travellers, exploring on our own. The purpose of this review is to say how much we benefitted from travelling through the Ukraine and Moldova with Kateryna our knowledgeable, local, Russian speaking guide. She carried her knowledge lightly, conducting the group with those old fashioned virtues of patience and grace, but ready to answer any questions, to give guidance on where best to eat and how to fit the things we wanted to do into the time available. She was absolutely excellent. In the Crimea it was a further privilege to be taken round the war sites by Irina, an expert in the subject.

What Tips Would You Give To Someone Else Booking This Tour

We particularly wanted to visit the Bulgakov house in Kiev. Kateryna rightly told us that an appointment was needed. Indeed this is so. We were kindly allowed to join a group after my husband was able to demonstrate (in Russian) his wide reading of Bulgakov. But with only 2 afternoons free in Kiev, I would advise booking in advance. At Dorohozhychi Metro Station, platform level, there is a framed plan of the footpaths and Babi Yar memorials. Worth photoing with your phone before leaving the station as we could find no other map or guidance.

Do You Have Anything Else To Add

This was one of those rare holidays which exceeded our expectations. Possibly out of duty we wanted to visit some pivotal locations of the Crimean War, the Second World War, and of Russian culture. We didnt expect to find sunshine, good food and cities through which one felt happy to walk. We returned to UK lighter and healthier than we have been for years.

Big, unexpected highlight was chance to visit Chernobyl. Get there quick before more of the site is removed! Many other unexpected highlights such as the submarine pens and the small private museum to the Crimean war in Balaclava. Even staying in the 1400 room hotel in Yalta was fun and interesting for people watching. We had a great cohesive group of 13 lead by Stu Blackburn, a new guide who was warm and liked by us all. We were let down by some local guides and Sputnik reps, especially in Kiev, whose english was quite hard to understand and who couldn't answer questions 'outside the box'.  Usually I am in favour of local tour leaders but not in this case. Neither their english nor their personalities are ready for the challenge. The best local guides were the 2 ladies, both over 60, who could share a little of their life history with us. The tour would have benefited from providing Stu with more local history and knowledge. (RKC- 8th August)
