Highlights were Albania, and the Valbona Valley in particular - a special place indeed.
Peja, Kosovo and Prizren were also great. Skopje was weird, but nice. Ohrid was fantastic.

Overall, a well balanced trip with just enough of everything to keep each day different!

Don't forget your sink plug, although the standard of hotels was generally high - with the notable exception of Hotel Briliant, somewhere near Prishtina, Kosovo.

Albania is incredibly cheap - 3 course meal, with 3 alcoholic drinks = £6. Kosovo gets a bit more expensive, and Macedonia is ridiculous - imagine actually paying £1 for a beer!

Endrit, our guide, and Fati, the driver, were a great team and kept us informed and entertained throughout.

The walks were not at all strenuous, if you are used to walking. But there are opportunities to avoid the walking entirely, if you wish (wouldn't advise it though!)

Only slight drawback was that doing the last trip of the season, we arrived at some places too late at night to be able to see anything (due to the dark!) - in particular, Mavrovo National Park, Macedonia - and then left first thing in the morning. Not a major issue.

1. the spectacular scenery and peace and serenity of the Valbona Valley
2. the copious quantities of excellent food, economically priced.
3. the high standard of most of the hotels
4. the beautiful monasteries
5. the depth of knowledge, humour and friendliness of the Guide - Endrit and of the driver - Fati.

1. find out when venues might be closed because of special holidays - difficult because it will vary from month to month.
2. look at the various options for flights carefully - we found out later that there was a direct flight Gatwick-Tirana, instead of changing and long wait at Vienna
3. read Explore paperwork carefully as several of us were caught out by not taking a hard copy of a questionnaire with us
4. ask Explore to find a different hotel to the Hotel Brilant.

Welwyn Garden City
The variety - mix of cultural locations (monasteries, mosques etc) and landscape. Excellent tour leader - Bledi Jubani - who was keen that we saw the best of his country (even took us home to meet his family!).
If anyone is going to do the quite strenuous hikes (definitely more than just gentle walks) do take proper walking boots.

The Ethnographic Museum at Kruja.
The mountain scenery at Valbona & Boga
The cable car up the mountain to the milenniun Cross at Skopje.
The Mosques
The Monastries tho' we were rushed through these and needed much longer.
Hikes require walking boots (luckily I took mine) and I would take poles as well next time.

A very good tour company that employs local guides with lots of knowledge and experience. They often go beyond the last mile to please clients.
