Busy trip. Smaller group than expected, only four of us. Tour leader was very knowledgeable about Morocco and local area but did have a habit of walking quite fast and quite some distance in front of us, which was a times a little disconcerting and meant the first person was sometimes up to five minutes behind him and this pushed pace on as if we did not keep up we did not where to go.

In the words of Tina Turner it was "Simply the Best"

I'm not the fittest by any means but the guides were great and helped me every step of the way !!

Morocco is an interesting and attractive country and this is a nice mountain challenge that offers the chance to get some winter skills experience. I think however that our trip was slightly different to what most people encounter, so I've written an honest account of what it can be like for people to bear in mind. I would hope that anyone booking this trip would be aware of the limitations that location and weather potentially impose. If you're good with that, then brilliant. This is what happened with us...

The snow came in heavy and hard and we found ourselves walking up to the main refuge in challenging weather with (true) reports of someone dying ahead of us. This would appear to be the tragic result of poor decision making on their part meaning that they were out overnight. They did not have a guide. On safely reaching the refuge, we made our first summit attempt the next day. Visibility was poor and the wind and snow still very hard going so we only made it about half way and no one questioned the decision to turn back on safety grounds.

The next day we tried again and started with poor visibility but otherwise better conditions. About half way up, we had the truly beautiful moment where the skies cleared within moments and we were treated to gorgeous eerie light changes suddenly followed by the postcard-like views we had all been hoping for. Wonderful. We went on to summit successfully and the usual cheery group photos and celebrations. We felt extra proud for making it through the deep virgin snow that had added even more to the challenge.

We completed one other walk that was both lovely and challenging but were unable to fit in Ouanoukrim due to our two Toubkal attempts. We descended in clear skies and blazing sunshine and despite our best efforts, all got burnt. We passed people who were clearly ill-equipped for possible weather changes and who had left for the refuge too-late in the day.

I had a really rewarding time with a great group and our experiences gave us a good if sometimes sobering idea of what the mountains can really be like. Explore's itinerary was well-chosen and we were excellently supported by our guides and crew. Meat-eaters and vegetarians were all impressively looked after and where there was flexibility in accommodation, Explore had done well. The Toubkal refuge it should be noted can get a lot of moisture building up meaning your sleeping bag etc may get a bit damp and / or your breathing might be affected. It is however surprisingly warm. As is probably obvious, you may occasionally spend more time than anticipated here.

I totally recommend this trip and for most people, I'm sure it'd be the straight-forward, clear skies type-experience we ended on. But be properly prepared just in case...

Blizzards, waist high snow, altitude issues...fantastic adventure. I would go back again and again.

Mazoz Mohamed was a great guide and his second Mustapha was brill. They made the trip worth while, it was relaxed and they encouraged us during the climb singing songs on the way up was fun. Mohamed and Mustapha joined in the card, games made us feel like one big family. I have been on other Explore trips of which I have enjoyed, Mohamed has by far been the best in my opinion.

Spending New Year in the mountain refuge was a real highlight for me. Away from the bustle and commercialised New Year festivities at home, instead we were gazing at the stars and singing rousing songs - completely sober!

Our guide, Mohamed, was excellent. He set a steady, consistent pace up the mountains and was supportive of all members of the group; we all had moments where we needed some reassurance.

To someone booking this trip in future, I would advise bringing lots of toilet roll as the refuge does not provide any. Also, expect to buy all your water (I don't think I was expecting this, but it may have been in the tour notes).

I would highly recommend this tour. It's my first with Explore and I feel certain I will be going back again soon, to Morocco or further afield.

There were plenty of good points throughout the trip. The satisfaction of reaching the summit of Toubkal without requiring any technical mountaineering experience. Anyone with a good level of physical fitness should be able to make it to the top. The views from Ouanoukrim, which, although not difficult, was a much more demanding climb and included a short section of scrambling. The food was excellent, the guide was brilliant, the organisation couldn't be faulted and to top it off, to be able to experience it all with a fabulous group of like minded people made all the difference.

The whole experience was brilliant. Climbing the two tallest mountains in N Africa was fabulous and provided a real sense of achievement. The group of people were outstanding and I loved every moment of the trip.

Hard to pick just one - obviously (everyone) successfully summiting Toubkal, although sharing the whole experience with such a great group of like-minded people was wonderful. Mohamed (Mazouz) had a good grasp of English, allowing him to not only converse freely with the group but regularly updating us with local geography and customs. Both guides managed the group well on the trek, ensuring everyone summited Toubkal on the first available day.
