Wild Zambia

Malawi, Zambia - Trip code WZ

Wild Zambia

On this true pioneering wilderness adventure through Zambia we will discover remote and alluring national parks and uncover a raw Africa, rarely touched by tourists. Sleeping in bush chalets and camping in national parks, this trip stays in the heart of Zambia's wildlife wonderlands including South and North Luangwa, the latter only recently opened to the public and teeming with buffalo and hunting lion. We go in search of the elusive shoebill stork in their native swamps and take walking safaris in Zambia's first ever game reserve - Kasanka National Park.

Why book this trip

This trip has been designed for lovers of Africa who want to see a different side of the great continent. We have chosen national parks and protected areas away from the tourist trail and hardly expect to see other travellers once we leave South Luangwa. This is a chance to see the wild plains and wildlife-filled wetlands of Zambia, one not to be missed.

Climate

The main rainy season is from January to March. Rain is widespread and generally falls in the form of a thunderstorm in the late afternoon; grass tends to be long and there is more water about so game is more dispersed. Otherwise it is dry, with low humidity for most of the year. Temperatures reach around 29°C during the day with quite cold nights throughout the year. Early dry season is the most pleasant time for temperatures and the best for bird watching. For game viewing though the late dry season is better Additional information and climate charts can be accessed at http://www.explore.co.uk/weather. Seasonal weather patterns can be unpredictable. Up-to-date information on the weather worldwide can be found by following the BBC weather link on this page.

Budgeting and packing

Optional activities

Late Afternon Game Drive in South Luangwa National Park at $45 pp plus park fees at $25 pp, Afternoon Walking Safari in Kasanka National Park at $25 pp plus $35 fixed group fee for ranger, Canoe trip at Bangweulu at $30 pp (activity is dependent on water levels).

Clothing

Clothing should be lightweight, but a warm sweater and/or fleece jacket is advisable as nights can be cold as Zambia lies on an elevated plateau. It can be particularly cold on early morning game drives until the sun has risen and also towards the end of afternoon game drives as the sun can drop quite dramatically. Rainwear is useful in case of an unexpected downpour. A scarf is advisable for dusty drives. Do not wear bright colours whilst game viewing.

Footwear

Lightweight trail boots or shoes with grip for walking safaris plus trainers or sandals for general travelling.

Luggage

15Kg

Luggage: On tour

One main piece of luggage (MUST be a soft bag or holdall) plus day sack. Hard suitcases cannot be carried on this trip as all the luggage is tightly squeezed in our 4x4's. The maximum weight of your main bag should not exceed 15kg.

Equipment

You should bring a sleeping bag, torch, water bottle, insect repellent, sunhat and sunblock. Binoculars are useful, as is a telephoto lens for keen photographers. Our vehicles have charging points for cameras, however it's a good idea to bring spare batteries and a memory card. If you wear prescription glasses a spare pair is advisable (as are spare contact lenses if applicable) as dust may be a problem. Please also bring a swimming costume and towel.

Tipping

Explore leader
Tour Leader: At your discretion you might also consider tipping your Tour Leader in appreciation of the efficiency and service you receive.
Local crew
Although entirely voluntary, tipping is a recognised part of life in this region of the world. Some local staff will look to members of the group for personal recognition of particular services provided. Accordingly, you should allow US$ 50 for tipping. In order to make things easier for you, the Tour Leader may organise a group's tips kitty and if this is the case, they will account for it throughout the tour.

Booking a Single Room

All of our group tours are planned and operated on a twin-share basis, meaning that the standard cost is based either on individual travellers sharing accommodation with another group member of the same sex, or people who book together sharing accommodation. Please refer to the tour notes where the single room option availability is detailed on a night by night basis for this tour, and the price for the available nights is detailed on the dates & prices tab by departure date. For Self-Guided trips the Single Room supplement offers the option of a single room each and is charged per person. The Single Room supplement also applies to the third person in a party of three that will be accommodated in a single room.

Please note that the single room option on this tour is not offered in Thornicroft Camp on nights 2 and 3, and also the Buffalo Chalets on nights 10 and 11. Like many adventures of this type, much of the team-spirit, fun and camaraderie is developed through mucking-in and helping set up camp. Participants should therefore be prepared to help out as required. Be prepared for some early starts and for some long days - there is an enormous amount to see.
