Atlantis - discovering a mythical city

Atlantis - discovering a mythical city

‘A strange, ancient dwelling; a world of bull leaping, of snake-haired goddesses and of palaces so vast it was said they were built by giants.’ The description given to Atlantis in the new BBC series about the mysterious island may be the stuff of sci-fi and fantasy, but the ‘real’ Atlantis myth goes back to ancient Greece and the writings of Plato.

The legend of Atlantis has excited the world for centuries and, while no one knows the location of the sunken city (or whether it was actually a real place rather than just a story) there is constant speculation as to its location. Plato described it as ‘in front of The Pillars of Hercules’, an area which is now the Straits of Gibraltar. Many have thought the Greek island of Santorini to be the lost city, while other ‘evidence’ has pointed towards areas off the coast of Cyprus and, most recently, marshland in southern Spain.

For those enthralled by the mystery and intrigue of ancient Greek myths and legends and looking for the opportunities to see sunken cities, we have plenty of options.

Greek myths and legends
Discover an area once believed to be Atlantis and a place still of great interest to those enthusiastic about the Atlantis Legend – Santorini – on our Greek Island Wanderer tour. You’ll also visit other areas steeped in ancient Greek history all while seeing some of the most beautiful Greek islands.

Sunken cities
Atlantis is not the only sunken city to be found! Turkey is home to a set of picturesque islands, bays and small ancient cities. Here you’ll find the sunken city of Kekova. The results of various earthquakes, the partly submerged streets and buildings are visible in the crystal clear waters; there are even steps leading down into the depths of the bay. Try one of these tours for the chance to sea-kayak over these ancient ruins for a close-up look.

Alternatively, check out all our tours to Greece or Turkey –two countries which are home to an array of myths, legends and ancients for you to feast on.
