Discovering China

china katie shanghai"I recently had the opportunity to travel on our China Explorer tour; this was my first trip to Asia and my first Explore tour. I was very worried before I went as I hadn’t been on a group holiday before, nor had I been to Asia; I didn’t know what to expect! However as soon as I met the Tour Leader and the group all my worries disappeared and all I felt was excitement. Our Tour Leader, Bruce, was lovely and so were the group. Whilst we were in China they were having a heat wave and the temperature rose as high as 36 degrees centigrade on some days - but the sky was clear and we saw some beautiful views.

Everyone has asked what my highlight was on tour but for me the whole tour was a highlight. However, if I had to pick a few things out then I would say that the Terracotta Warriors were a main highlight for me. They are such a widely known attraction but to be there and see how many there actually are is surreal. You can't appreciate the scale until you see if with your own eyes.

The bike ride along the City Wall was an incredible experience and a lot of fun for the whole group. Many members of the group, including myself, had not ridden a bike in years; the bikes were very squeaky which added to the amusement. Walking the Great Wall was incredible too; such inspiring views and it was very overwhelming as the wall is so iconic. Lastly, the evening cruise in Shanghai was spectacular with all of the skyline buildings and the bright lights.

china katie cricket

We visited a local man’s house for lunch whilst in Beijing, which was an unforgettable experience. His wife made us lunch which was delicious. Once we had eaten he showed us his collection of crickets, which he uses for cricket fighting. He also showed us photos of himself with different celebrities and his awards he had won over the years. He was really passionate about them - you could see this in his facial expressions and gestures as he spoke.

This tour was such an amazing experience and I cannot wait to visit Asia again!"
