Jordan is a country which is renowned for its ancient sites and desert landscapes. With the centrepiece of Petra, the country is brimming with history and is always popular with adventure travellers. If you are intereseted in a more active holiday, why not get out and explore the ruins and deserts of Jordan on two wheels on our Cycle Jordan adventure?
We asked Tour Leader Steve Edgar why he thinks Jordan is great to experience from the saddle. Steve led his first tours for Explore in 1988 and over 100 tours in 20 countries later he is now involved in developing new tours and training of new Tour Leaders whenever the opportunity arises. Along with cycling, Steve's main interest has always been in history, culture and the stories found while travelling, he thinks Jordan is the perfect place to indulge his two passions.
Steve's top five reasons to cycle in Jordan are:
1. Petra and the History
While you may get about a lot quicker when powered by a motor, there's nothing like travelling by pedal power to really feel close to a country. When cycling along the Kings Highway you can’t fail to miss the traces of the Edomites, Nabateans, and Crusaders on one of the great routes of the ancient world.
2. The Landscapes
Jordan is just made up of just desert right? Wrong. The country is a geomorphologist's delight and offers a variety of dramatic scenery. Make sure you keep a camera handy to snap the varying landscapes you'll experience along the way. Even better, if you have a video camera you can attach to the front of your bike, you'll capture some amazing views!
3. The People
On a bike there are plenty of opportunities to strike up conversations with the people you meet along the way. In this part of the world, there is a long-held tradition of providing hospitality to strangers which still holds true today. So don’t be surprised if a quick stop for a chat turns into an invitation to share some coffee and snacks!
4. Quiet roads
This speaks for itself really...cycling in Jordan is nothing like cycling the cities and roads back home. You'll see what I mean when you get there!
5. The Best Descent You Can Ever Do On a Bike Without Climbing a Mountain First!
Only in Jordan can you freewheel down to the planet's lowest place. Mont Ventoux in reverse? Careening down the truly breathtaking series of switchbacks towards the unique setting of the saline waters of the Dead Sea is unbeatable.
