Top 5 October half-term destinations

Top 5 October half-term destinations

By Antony Barton, Family Programme Manager

Explore family adventures are designed to fit around school holiday dates, but just because school’s out it doesn’t mean our trips are devoid of educational benefits. In fact our trips are packed full of new experiences that can enrich, educate and inspire young people.

Our most popular half-term break is October; being at the start of the academic year and bridging the long autumn term, it’s an ideal time to travel - exam season is still a few months away, it’s a lot quieter, the weather in destinations such as India, Sri Lanka, Morocco and Egypt is ideal and prices are often lower compared to the summer. Explore offers a wide choice of family holiday options that maximise your time away, so whether it’s a one week or two-week half term - we have the perfect active family holiday for you.

1. India, Family Taj, Tigers & Palaces from £789

Departure dates: 14 & 20 October 2017

October is an ideal month to travel to India, with the heat and humidity of the monsoon season well and truly over. Enjoy this fascinating 10-day introduction to northern India as we search for the Bengal Tiger in its natural habitat and visit the magnificent Taj Mahal at sunrise. We also explore a hilltop fortress, discover rural villages and take a camel safari across sand dunes. This varied holiday takes us from the bustling streets of Delhi, to the desert plains of Pushkar. We have designed our departure dates to fit into a one week half-term holiday.

2. Jordan, The lost city of Petra from £975

Departure date: 21 October 2017

Lost cities, Crusader castles and Martian film settings are all part of this family holiday to Jordan. We visit the ruins of the Roman city of Jerash and explore the spectacular lost city of Petra. We camp in the dramatic desert of Wadi Rum, scene of the 2015 hit film ‘The Martian’, discover the Crusader castle of Kerak and travel to the Dead Sea to experience the sensation of floating on the surface of its salty waters.

3. Croatian Active Adventure from £920

Departure date: 21 October 2017

Join us for a week of exciting activities in stunning Croatian landscapes. Based on an island just off Trogir and by the beautiful Dalmatian coast, we enjoy the thrills of whitewater rafting, try out sea kayaking and take the challenge of canyoning through caves and waterfalls. There is also time to discover Croatia’s historic sites or relax, making this the ideal trip for all the family.

4. Ecuador & Galapagos from £2849

Departure date: 14 October 2017

On this trip we combine a visit to the Enchanted Isles of the Galapagos with the main highlights of Ecuador. Explore the 'Avenue of the Volcanoes', ride on the 'Devil's Nose' railway, visit the colonial city of Quito and barter for goods at the colourful market in Otavalo. Furthermore, we search for wildlife not just in Amazonia but also the Galapagos with wildlife and natural wonders not found elsewhere in the world.

5. Egypt Family Egyptian Adventure from £729

Departure date: 20th October 2017

On this family holiday to Egypt we sail down the River Nile by felucca (a traditional sailing boat), ride camels through the desert and swim in the warm waters of the Red Sea. Join us as we explore one of the ancient wonders of the world, the Great Pyramids of Giza and discover the Valley of the Kings, home to the famous tomb of Tutankhamun.
