We lost our dear friend Deepen in an air crash. But his ever friendly and pleasant personality will always remain in our memories.
It was in February 11, 2001 that Deepen and I started our journey with Explore- leading groups to various beautiful places in the country. He left with the first group to Everest region and I went to Annapurna side on this day. He was always keen and ready to trial on the new routes and regions, however his personal favorite was Royal trek because of the view he could enjoy from Panchase Danda, which he thought was captivating.
Avid football player, he could be seen taking out time for it whenever possible! But he did not limit himself to this sport only because he always wanted to keep himself fit and was very health conscious among us. Jogging, morning walks and other kinds of sports was part of his life besides doing what he liked the most- trekking!
Family man, he was very close to his children esp. his daughter and had occasionally expressed his strong desire to give her good education and do something for her future. He also considered the education of his children as one of the reasons for him to move his base to Siliguri, India.
Last year, some of us (tour leaders) set out with our family to Annapurna region (Dhampus and Australian Camp) followed by Pokhara and Chitwan. It was one of the best times for us as we could enjoy trekking- and this time with our families. During this trip we had decided that we will plan on similar trip every year. However, I wonder we will be able to do it for some time without one of our good friends.
September 25, 2012 we were in the office preparing for the season’s trips. As it was Deepen’s birthday on this day he took us out for lunch. And unfortunately this was his last birthday celebration.
Such an irony, that his last trip also happened to be while going to the Everest region. Unfortunately, he lost his life leading the group which he had chosen to lead.
We lost a dear friend who was assertive and spoke his mind. Someone who loved and was passionate about his work! We will miss him!
