When London won the chance to host the 2012 Olympic Games, some predicted travel chaos, unfinished stadiums, sporting underachievement and general embarrassment.
But how wrong they were. The games were a spectacular success for the capital and, as a result, have inspired a whole generation to train harder at their sport or even pick up a racket or discus for the first time.
During the event itself many talked about taking up a new sport or getting more active, however it's not always easy to know where to start. If you like to combine exercise with adventure, then cycling holidays are a great way to get fit whilst exploring the hidden backroads of a new country. By travelling at a slower pace, you get the chance to take in your surroundings, and meet the local people along the way.
As part of an organised tour you will have the camaraderie of the others in your group plus the benefit of a modern, well-maintained bike, a knowledgeable tour leader and your luggage transferred to each night’s accommodation. There are lots of classic cycle routes all over the world, and many are currently being developed to make them nicer to cycle and easier to follow. A classic European route is the Danube cycle way. Stretching from Germany to the Black Sea, it takes in some stunning scenery and beautiful cities along the way. Although you my be left with Strauss’ Blue Danube going around in your head for weeks afterwards.
For a beginner, the easiest part of the route is from Passau (Germany) to Vienna. There are no significant climbs, and you are constantly rewarded by the beautiful views. If you do start to struggle, the Germanic diet of sausage and beer should be enough to give you that extra boost just when you need it.

If you would rather keep your feet firmly on the ground, walking tours are a good way to increase your heart rate and get blood pumping. Ranging in difficulty and pace, it’s possible to find a tour to suit every ability.
On an ‘easy’ route, you would be walking from three to five hours a day and, like cycling holidays, the tours include rest and recovery days. During which you can visit the nearby sites or just put your feet up for a few well-earned hours.
If you don’t want to give up that beach holiday in the sun completely, a walking tour in the Mediterranean could be the answer. Italy’s Amalfi coast is jam-packed with natural beauty and man-made sights, and offers a wealth of walking routes. When the heat gets too much, there are plenty of opportunities to cool off in the sea.
Scattered with picture-perfect villages and unspoiled National Parks, the Amalfi coast has plenty to keep even the most active walker occupied. With Pompeii and Capri just a day trip away, there’s plenty to do when you’re out of your walking boots too.
