What is a caique?
Greek caiques unlike Turkish gulets and Croatian Old-Timers are boats that existed in this part of the world for thousands of years. Since Ancient Greek times the image of the caique is an inseparable part of daily life. In times of peace they carried the Greeks to many places such as Naples or the Black sea. In times of war they were the ones to fight the enemies.
How did you get involved in caiques?
My family was always involved in Greek shipping and they always owned a few of the caiques. My father was one of the pioneers of tourism in this country making sure that he would take guests to places that ferry boats and cruise-liners wouldn't reach.
Where in Greece is the caique cruise?
Evia, which is the second biggest island of Greece. But it is one of the very few, if not the only one, that is still 'off the beaten track' as most people have never heard of it! The crew are all native Evians who love showing their hidden gem to our guests and they are the ones to accompany them to wonderful seaside tavernas for dinner or to sleepy cafes for an aperitif.
What happens on the cruise?
Visiting different places everyday we have the opportunity to walk inland a few miles to experience a divine countryside with lots of running hills full of historic villages and landmarks of nature which are all totally Greek and unspoilt.
Why is travelling on a caique so special?
The combination of travelling on a piece of Greek history visiting places that not many Brits have ever heard of and walking in one of the lushest parts of the country, never far away from the beautiful coastline of turquoise waters make this trip a true Greek treat. The waters, the swimming, the fishing villages, the walks and the excellent local cuisine with full-bodied white or red wines make this week long trip a holiday of a lifetime. The numbers of people that keep coming back says it all!
You can experience the caique cruise with other adults or as a family. With plenty of swimming and sunbathing opportunities, as well as optional walks, you can be as relaxed or as adventurous as you like!
