Explore Turkey on Foot

Explore Turkey on Foot

Putting your best foot forward: Why is early spring the perfect time to explore Turkey on foot?

As the long winter nights draw in and the mercury drops down into single figures, you’d be forgiven for casting your thoughts longingly back to recent summer holidays, complete with sun, sea and ice cream.

But don’t despair, in countries like Turkey the thaw is closer than you think and by the early spring the sun will be shinning and the winter long gone.

And as Turkey is great to explore on foot, why not look into a Turkish walking holiday and banish those winter blues for good?

Walking in Turkey

Most of the holidaymakers who visit this beautiful country come purely for the sun, sea and swimming pools and rarely venture far from their all-inclusive resorts.

However, Turkey is much more than just a beach holiday and actually has some of the most spectacular landscapes, best-preserved countryside and varied terrain anywhere in Europe.

This makes it the ideal destination for walkers looking for a new country to explore. And when you add in the fantastic climate, the delicious food, fascinating history and the friendly inhabitants, you’re really on to a winner.

As the summer in Turkey can become very hot, early spring is the perfect time to strap on those walking boots and get exploring.

The most famous trekking route in Turkey is the Lycian Way, a spectacular long distance walk that stretches for 510km through the ancient province of Lycia.

Hiking any part of the route would be a highlight for any keen walker, but with beautiful beaches, historic ruins and unspoilt villages to explore as well, this region becomes unmissable for anyone with an adventurous spirit.

Other highlights in the area include the picturesque town of Kas, right in the heart of the Turquoise coast. Here you could spend weeks exploring the trails that criss-cross the local landscape, taking in some of the most staggering views in the Mediterranean as you go.

If you’re looking for an alternative to the Turkish mainland, nearby Northern Cyprus also offers fantastic conditions for walking in the spring months.

Like Turkey, North Cyprus boasts unspoilt landscapes, rugged mountains and ancient ruins. Tours in this region are based in the charming harbour town of Kyrenia, allowing guests to really get to know the area and experience an authentic slice of Cypriot life.

Ability and comfort

Though the terrain in both Turkey and North Cyprus is varied, all of our guides know the trails and paths incredibly well and go out of their way to ensure that all abilities are catered for.

During your tour you’ll have lots of opportunities to experience local culture, from the traditional villages that you’ll walk through to the mouth-watering dishes available to sample.

And, as all accommodation is carefully checked to ensure comfort and cleanliness, you can be sure of a great night’s sleep at the end of an exciting day’s trek.

With the sun fast warming up and the landscape bursting into life, springtime is the perfect season to explore the Turkish or Northern Cypriot landscape on foot.

So, don’t let winter get you down, book a spring walking tour in Turkey and you’ll be stretching your legs on the spectacular Mediterranean coastline before you know it.
