Tuesday 22nd April marks Earth Day and we’re getting involved, are you?
Every year on 22nd April, over a billion people in 190 different countries take action for Earth Day. Earth Day marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement, and people from across the world come together to help the environment. From San Francisco to San Juan and Moscow to Marrakesh, people plant trees, clean up their communities, contact their elected officials, and much much more.
The theme of this years’ Earth Day is ‘Green Cities’ and it focusses on three key areas; green buildings, energy and transportation. Here at Explore, we like to think we already do a lot in these areas; at our head office we use green energy, we have a vast recycling system in place - even our carpets were made recycled car tyres and traffic cones, we have installed waterless urinals in the men’s toilets and on a wider scale, we were the first major adventure travel company to offset our carbon emissions for staff and customer flights. These are just a few of the things we do, but for Earth Day, our staff across the globe will be going the extra mile for the environment.
Staff at our head office in Farnborough will be leaving their cars behind for the day and commuting to the office by any other means. They’ll be walking, running, catching the train or bus and cycling to ensure they get to work by any other means but car, while at the same time reducing their carbon emissions.
Our tour leaders and groups around the world will also be taking part. In Mallorca our staff on the ground will be clearing local beaches and starting a ‘Keep Mallorca Tidy’ campaign; our groups in Italy will be encouraged to walk on their free day rather than travel on transport; in Greece our staff will be undertaking a clear up on Evia Island and signposting ancient mountain trails using recycled materials; our groups in Costa Rica will attend a special lecture on global warming while our staff will be planting trees; our groups in Ethiopia will be having a dinner by candlelight and our groups in Peru will spend half a day litter picking.
We’d love to know what other creative ideas our customers at home can come up with for Earth Day. Whether you’re looking to plan a big litter picking event or you want to plant a tree to mark the day, every effort counts. Please let us know what your plans are on our Facebook page, or tweet us at @Explore_Chat about your plans – we’ll be talking about the ones we love the most on Earth Day so watch this space!
