Moroccan Highlights

Moroccan Highlights

Explore Product Executive Leigh Gordon is just back from Morocco where she travelled on our Highlights of Morocco adventure. We asked her a couple of questions about her time away.

1. Before your trip, what was your biggest concern?
The only concern I had was how safe I was from hastle being a blonde female tourist in Morocco. And I needn't have worried! Morocco is a really safe country and, other than a bit of hustle in the souks there was absolutely nothing to worry about. I always felt completely safe, especially as part of an Explore group and with a Moroccan Tour Leader.

2. What were the three major highlights of the tour and why?
The first highlight for me was waking up really early in the morning to mount camels for a trek through the Sahara Desert to watch the sun rise. It was absolutey amazing. I just loved being in the Sahara and watching the sunrise from on top of Erg Chebbi, one of Morocco's highest sand dunes; it was just magical.

My second highlight was exploring Fes. Fes was vibrant, noisy, fascinating and overwhelming. It was a welcome assault on all the senses - the sights, sounds and smells combined to create a true Moroccan experience that should be had by all!

My final highlight was actually the Moroccan people. They were kind, warm and so hospitable. Everyone we met was so friendly, always saying hello and happy to do anything for you.

3. What would be the one key piece of advice you would give someone planning on visiting Morocco for the first time?
I think the one key piece of advice for anyone planning to visit Morocco for the first time is that tipping is a huge part of the culture here. Be prepared to give tips for pretty much everything from using public toilets to taking pictures of the locals; always have some small change handy to show your appreciation.
