Memories of Sri Lanka

Added 10 Jul 2014
Memories of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a country which has been a popular destination among Explore staff over recent years. It's a testament to the sheer diversity of the island and the friendliness of the people that so many staff have visited. Here just a few of them share their one residing memory from their time spent in Sri Lanka.

sri lanka wildlife

"The animals were unforgettable - sperm whale, blue whales, land and water monitor lizards, kingfishers, kites, elephants, giant squirrels, turtles, monkeys, water buffalo and lots more. The highland town of Kandy was also a personal highlight. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it's scenic and is also home to the Temple of the Tooth relic. Walking around the lake in the evening is really beautiful and the botanical gardens are a must-see. Well-kept and immensely colourful, there are also thousands of bats that you can get some great pictures of in some of the trees. The variety of historical sites at Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa keep the temple visits interesting and it's great to see that so many of the temples are still in use today."
Sarah King - Sales Manager

sri lanka locals

"The highlight of my visit to Sri Lanka was taking lunch with a local family. The Tour Leader arranged this one day and we all ate outside with a local farming family. There were three generations living in the same house and we got to spend time with them, share a meal and stories of our own family life. The food was great; proper local food rather than the tourist version!"
Hannah Methven - Product Manager

sri lanka sigiriya

"While in Sri Lanka I really enjoyed my visit to Sigiriya Rock, otherwise known as Lion Rock. The walk up was certainly worth it as we were rewarded with the most fantastic views of Sri Lanka."
Lucy Nicholl - Risk Manager

sri lanka tea

"Having been fortunate to visit Sri Lanka several times, it’s the variety of the destination that draws me back time and time again. Whether it be cycling around a temple complex, searching for leopard in the little-visited Wilapatu Park, wandering through tea country or eating fantastic food in a beach-side shack, it's always possible to find something different to do."
