We ask our new Family Programme Manager, Antony Barton, for his favourite holiday tips and treats.
For families it has got to be Vietnam; it offers such great value and is a fantastic blend of stunning scenery, great food offering traditional Vietnamese specialties with great coffee and delectable patisseries, a throw-back to the French colonial period, pristine beaches and welcoming hospitality. Vietnam truly has something for everyone.
Best ever family travel experience?
Enjoying the beautiful scenery walking in the French Alps is hard to beat – the good lift infrastructure, open in the summer months of July and August allowed us to take lifts up the mountain, which the children loved, as well as the sensational panoramic views. Our ‘Family French Alps Adventure’ combines many different activities as well as walking – whitewater rafting being one!
If money was no object where would you go?
Ecuador and the Galapagos – I just love wildlife and want my children to appreciate the natural world and gain a sense of responsibility for it. Our ‘Family Ecuador and Galapagos Adventure’, illustrating endemic species and unique ecosystems, would be an amazing experience.
What’s your best travel tip?
When you’ve finished packing take it all out again, remove 50% and pack the rest. It’s well worth downloading some films in advance for the plane journeys.
What’s your recipe for a good family trip?
It has to have something for everyone and provide a healthy mix of varied activities with quality time with family. Explore family itineraries incorporate a relaxed pace without compromising on experiences. It’s the attention to detail like minimizing time travelling, varied activities offering an insight into the countries we visit, the use of good quality and selecting locally-run accommodation with pools to keep the kids entertained.
What else does Explore offer families?
Time and again our customers comment how our Tour Leaders add an unexpected dimension to their holiday. Our long-standing working relationships with our local teams coupled with over 14 years of running family holidays enables us to have access to some of the best family tour leaders around. Their passion and knowledge really helps bring everything to life – be that anecdotes about the Romans or ancient Mayan traditions, how better to bring the classroom to life than experiencing first-hand the wonders of the ancient world. Experiences that stand the test of time and last a lifetime.
Travelling as part of a small group of between three and five other families also enables experiences to be shared, the chance to make great new friendships, leaving the adults to relax and do the same.
Where would you like to travel next?
Italy – either Tuscany (Explore has some great activity holidays there); or the Amalfi coast/Pompeii (we have a lovely ‘Family in the Shadow of Vesuvius’ trip, which is great for children from age five and brings in some of their classroom history).
But don’t just take our word for it, find out what our young Explorers think about our best ever range of family holidays.
