Morocco - On the road

Morocco - On the road

Sarah Slocomb, Regional Specialist for North Africa, spent a week on the road in Morocco. While out there she sent us blog updates detailing her time in the country. Featuring the mountains and the desert, her time was action-packed discovering new sights, sounds and flavours:

Update one...

"Morocco is fantastic (if rather hot)!

So far, I’ve travelled from Fes down to Erfoud. It was great watching the scenery change. Ifrane looks like it belongs in Bavaria or Switzerland, not in the middle of Morocco – it’s a very swish place. I also drove through a cedar forest before hitting the mountains for a delicious picnic, Moroccan-style, with lots of fresh food. We then went down through the valley to Erfoud, watching it get drier and drier. Just stunning.

Sarah-MonkeySince then, I’ve visited Casablanca, Rabat, Meknes, Fes and Voulblis. Fes was fantastic. I stayed in the very same place as Bono from U2. He was there for four months and guess who got to stay in his suite…?!?
Tomorrow, I am off into the Sahara and then onto Ouarzazate the day after. Time is flying by.

I never thought I would see an ape in Morocco, but thought I'd share the picture of him sat on top of the car that I took today in the forest."

Update two...

"I wouldn’t have thought it possible, but each place I visit in Morocco is more beautiful than the last.

Sarah-Morocco2Last time I wrote I had just reached Erfoud, close to the edge of the Sahara Desert and I was itching to get out there and explore the sand dunes of Erg Chebbi. I wasn’t disappointed. When I reached Merzouga the following day, you could see the striking dunes for miles to come, and after spending the afternoon relaxing at the Kasbah Tombouctou to escape the intense desert heat, we headed out to our Berber camp in time for sunset. It was still very warm that night so I brought my mattress outside and slept underneath the blanket of stars. It was truly magical.

From there, I travelled to Ouarzazate, a key town on the caravan trading route to Tombuktu where I expericed my hottest temperatures yet – 39 degrees. Thank God for air conditioning! During my time here I visited the Atlas Film Studios, and the newer CLA studios which were used during the filming of Prometheus. I also had time to see the mighty Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou and check out a couple of hotels before beginning my journey north.

After stopping to visit Sir Richard’s Branson’s luxury retreat, Kasbah Tamadot in the town of Asni, I continued into the High Atlas Mountains, to Imlil, which is where I’ve been for the last two nights. Imlil is the gateway to the Toubkal National Park and also the starting point for many wanting to make the ascent up to the summit of Jebel Toubkal, the highest mountain in Morocco. I’ve had mint tea in the famous Kasbah du Toubkal, eaten freshly picked cherries and enjoyed a hike up to the Sidi Chamarouch shrine and through the village of Aremd, one of the largest in the High Atlas. It’s been amazing - I forgot how much I love the serenity of the mountains.

Last night I joined my guide, Mohamed, at the nearby café where I enjoyed drinks and laughter with the Explore group that had arrived that morning. Great fun!

This afternoon I’ve arrived in Essaouira. I can hear the seagulls and the buzz of the medina from my hotel room. I can’t wait to get out there and start exploring.

On Friday, I make my last journey to Marrakech, where I’ll spend my final two nights in Morocco. It’s been a great 10 days so far; I can’t believe how quickly the time has gone. I’ve seen so much, and every second has been fantastic."
