The Great Migration - Tailormade

Added 13 Mar 2012
The Great Migration - Tailormade

One of the greatest wildlife spectacles in the world is the Great Migration where hundreds of thousands of grazing animals cross Kenya’s Masai Mara and Tanzania’s Serengeti.

migration-mapwebThe animals follow the rains to make the most of the resulting growth of fresh vegetation. This continuous cycle sees immense numbers of wildebeest, zebra and Thomson’s gazelle move en masse across the plains. To see legions of large animals stretching as far as the eye can see is truly remarkable.

Naturally, the predators take full advantage of this plentiful larder, picking off the young and the weak where they can. One of the most exciting spots to witness the battle for survival is at a river crossing. Forced to cross where the terrain allows, wildebeest plunge into crocodile-laden waters and swim for their lives. Back on the banks, safety is by no means certain; leopards, lion and hyena take the opportunity to feast on the rich pickings while they can. It’s impossible to predict exactly when the animals will reach the river crossings so it’s a sight that only the lucky few get to witness.

With animals always on the move, it can be a challenge to keep up with them. Our migration map gives an indication of the times of year that the animals are generally to be found in each location. Talk to our Africa Tailormade specialists and we will do our best to make sure that you are in the heart of the migration action by choosing accommodation which is in the right location in the right season. Of course, these are wild animals and rain patterns can change so it is not possible to absolutely guarantee where they will be at any given time.

With with intimate knowledge of the best safari areas, we can help you plan your itinerary to suit your budget, from simple 2-man tents to luxurious camps and lodges. We even use safari camps which move with the animals! To find out more, call Sarah Phelps, one of our Africa Tailormade experts on 01252 883 184
