Make active holidays your Olympic legacy

Added 17 Aug 2012
Make active holidays your Olympic legacy

During the Olympics many of us harboured aspirations to take up new sports or at the least get more active, but where do you start? Our easy rated active holidays provide a great first step on the journey to a more active lifestyle.

When London won the chance to host the 2012 Olympic Games, some predicted travel chaos, unfinished stadiums, sporting underachievement and general embarrassment.

But how wrong they were. The games were a spectacular success for the capital and, as a result, have inspired a whole generation to train harder at their sport or even pick up a racket or discus for the first time.

During the event itself many talked about taking up a new sport or getting more active, however it's not always easy to know where to start. We know that the first step is always the hardest, so instead of a conventional 'fly and flop' holiday, why not book on one of our easy rated active holidays and start the journey towards a healthier you?

If you like to combine exercise with adventure, then cycling holidays are a great way to get fit whilst exploring the hidden backroads of a new country. By travelling at a slower pace, you get the chance to take in your surroundings, and meet the local people along the way.

As part of an organised tour you will have the camaraderie of the others in your group plus the benefit of a modern, well-maintained bike, a knowledgeable tour leader and your luggage transferred to each night’s accommodation. Take our word for it that this will make a massive difference to your legs at the end of each day.

Don’t worry about not being able to keep up: on ‘easy’ rated tours we travel at a relatively gentle pace and usually include rest days and optional days along the way, so there is plenty of time to let your saddle sore recover.

There are lots of classic cycle routes all over the world, and many are currently being developed to make them nicer to cycle and easier to follow. A classic European route is the Danube cycle way. Stretching from Germany to the Black Sea, it takes in some stunning scenery and beautiful cities along the way. Although you my be left with Strauss’ Blue Danube going around in your head for weeks afterwards.

For a beginner, the easiest part of the route is from Passau (Germany) to Vienna. There are no significant climbs, and you are constantly rewarded by the beautiful views. If you do start to struggle, the Germanic diet of sausage and beer should be enough to give you that extra boost just when you need it.

Our Blue Danube tour lasts for ten days.

If you would rather keep your feet firmly on the ground, walking tours are a good way to increase your heart rate and get blood pumping. Ranging in difficulty and pace, it’s possible to find a tour to suit every ability.

On an ‘easy’ route, you would be walking from three to five hours a day and, like cycling holidays, the tours include rest and recovery days. During which you can visit the nearby sites or just put your feet up for a few well-earned hours.

If you don’t want to give up that beach holiday in the sun completely, a walking tour in the Mediterranean could be the answer. Italy’s Amalfi coast is jam-packed with natural beauty and man-made sights, and offers a wealth of walking routes. When the heat gets too much, there are plenty of opportunities to cool off in the sea.

Scattered with picture-perfect villages and unspoiled National Parks, the Amalfi coast has plenty to keep even the most active walker occupied. With Pompeii and Capri just a day trip away, there’s plenty to do when you’re out of your walking boots too.

On the Amalfi tour, you are based in one location and travel each day from there. This means that each walk is optional: ideal if you want to take it easy one day and take a break. Amalfi Coast Walking tour.

We also offer a range of multi-activity holidays which provide you with the opportunity to challenge both body and mind with activities as thrilling as rafting, canoeing, sea-kayaking, canyoning, and mountain-biking.

Activities are suited to beginners, but most levels of experience can be accommodated. You may even discover talents you never knew existed!

Our activity holidays are great for solo travellers too, as the exhilarating activities on offer create the perfect icebreaker and offer a great way to get to know other members of the group.

Our eight-day Andalucia Adventure Holiday provides a mix of activities including horse riding, canoeing, mountain biking and walking as you explore the delights of two quite contrasting, and little-known regions of rural Spain and Portugal.

Whatever you choose to do, don't let your post-Olympic goals pass you by. The range of activities available to us all is endless and there really has never been a better time to take the first step.
