Summer Walking in Europe

Added 22 Apr 2014
Summer Walking in Europe

Where's best to go walking this summer? Our top five regions for summer walking in Europe, in no particular order, are...

Walking turkey

1. Turkey and North Cyprus
With its vast and diverse landscapes, rich history and delicious cuisine, Turkey has something for every type of walker. In the south the moderate graded Lycian Way wends its way along spectacular coastal paths and through small villages, while those who like a more challenging trek will enjoy walking in the Taurus Mountains and climbing Mount Ararat (5160m) in the east. For a more leisurely walking holiday the pretty harbour town of Kas provides the perfect base for easy graded coastal walks and visiting local historical sites.

Across the water, North Cyprus also offers wonderfully rewarding easy to moderate graded coastal and mountain walks with great views and tasty local food.

Walking spain

2. Spain
Spain offers walkers beautiful and diverse scenery, and the opportunity to sample local gastronomic delights. Classic walks include the moderate graded pilgrimage route across the high plains of the Castilian Meseta and through the Galician Mountains to Santiago de Compostela in the north. Alternatively, enjoy easy graded walks through the Basque Country, Rioja and Catalunya focussing on the local cuisine and wine, or explore the Moorish villages and beautiful landscapes of Andalucia on moderate graded walks from our base in the charming small village of Canillas de Albaida.

Walking portugal

3. Portugal and her islands
The volcanic island of Madeira offers moderate graded walks through dramatic scenery, including the impressive Balcony Walk on a path hewn into the cliff face and its famous levadas (narrow irrigation channel) trails. Similarly, the volcanic Azores Archipelago is also best explored on foot on easy to moderate graded walks; discovering rocky coastlines, crater lakes and thermal springs. Relaxing boat trips can also be taken in search of whale sightings. Alternatively combine easy graded walking with wine tasting in Portugal and Spain travelling from Madrid to Porto.

Walking italy

4. Italy
Head to Italy for a mix of wonderful landscapes, fabulous food, good quality wine and friendly locals. Enjoy easy to moderately graded coastal walking in early and late summer on the stunning Amalfi coast where you can reward your legs with a dip in the refreshing waters of the Mediterranean. Walk in ancient forests, troglodyte cities and sample delicious local produce in Puglia and Basilicata in the far south. Escape Tuscany’s summer heat in the Garfagnana Valley, a hidden gem where you can trek moderately graded trails of the Apennines and marble mountains of the Alpi Apuane.

Walking france

5. France
France’s hot summer is a time for walkers to head to the fresh air and cooling rivers of the mountains. The Alps have an intricate network of well-marked trails whilst cable cars and chair lifts provide easy access to the high ridges. For a leisurely walking holiday try an easy to moderately graded centre-based trip where you strike out each day from a comfortable hotel. If you’re up for a challenge, the Tour du Mont Blanc is the classic point-to-point Alpine trek circuiting this iconic mountain. For a moderately graded walking holiday with a cultural twist culture, discover the Cathar Castles of the Pyrenean foothills.
