Long distance walking trails

Added 02 Jun 2014
Long distance walking trails

Whether it's an ancient pilgrimage route or a trail specially designed for trekkers, there are many long-distance walks across the world. Some of them you may need a lot of time to fully walk, but we've taken the highlights of these routes

long distance lycian way

The Lycian Way
Celebrated as Turkey’s first long distance trail, the Lycian Way winds through the forested foot hills of the Taurus Mountains and along the spectacular Turquoise Coast. On our 6-day hike we walk the western part of the trail, starting from the Greek ‘ghost’ village of Kayakoy near Fethiye. En route we visit local villages, explore ancient sites (including Patara - the birth place of Saint Nicholas), and relax in the pretty harbour town of Kas. We also enjoy the wonderful, authentic local cuisine. We walk the trail for an average of six hours a day through undulating terrain and stunning scenery that will be enjoyed by any keen walker, and stay in a variety of village guesthouses and local hotels.

long distance saint paul

The Saint Paul Trail
A second long distance trail in Turkey is the Saint Paul Trail - actually two trails joining the magnificent Taurus Mountains and the beautiful south coast near Antalya. Starting near Lake Egirdir we hike through the mountains for five days following one of the trails along ancient roads and paths to the village of Beskonak. Walking through forest, pastures and limestone peaks we discover rural communities and little-known historic sites, including the Roman theatre at Selge. We walk this exhilarating trail for an average of six hours a day along marked paths suitable for anyone that enjoys hill walking. En route we stay in small family-run hotels and village guesthouses and enjoy the delicious local food.

long distance corfu trail

The Corfu Trail
Stretching the length of this beautiful island, the 220 km Corfu Trail takes us well off the beaten track. Starting near Kavos in the south and finishing in Agios Spyridos - Corfu’s most northerly point - the trail passes through diverse landscapes, including traditional olive groves, coastal paths and the Karst Plateau. We also visit local villages, discover remote monasteries and chapels, and climb to the highest points of the island. Our 15-day island stay includes ten days walking, two rest days and a day exploring the historic island capital, Kerkyra (Corfu Town). On the trail we walk for an average of five hours a day, mostly on a dedicated path, through beautiful and changing terrain suitable for anyone who walks regularly. The day we climb to the summit of Pantakrator (917m) is the most challenging. En route we stay in a variety of local accommodation. For those who have less time we also offer 8-day stays taking in either the north or south part of the trail.

long distance camino

The Camino de Santiago
The pilgrimage route known as Camino de Santiago is one of several hiking trails leading to Santiago de Compostela, thought to be the final resting place of Saint James. On our 12-day journey we hike for seven days through the most scenic parts of this trail between Burgos and Santiago, walking across the Castillian Meseta plains and through the Galician Mountains. En route we also pass through medieval villages and visit Gothic cathedrals. In addition there are also three rest days to explore the area more, including one day in Santiago. Staying in local hotels along the route, this atmospheric trail is suitable for anyone who regularly enjoys walking.

long distance tour de mont blanc

Tour du Mont Blanc
In the Alps, our Tour du Mont Blanc trek completes a circuit of the Mont Blanc massif, covering 165km and crossing five high passes in nine days. The route travels along forested valley floors, alongside glacier-fed rivers and up through flower-filled meadows. The views on every day of the trek are incredible and you trek through France, Italy and Switzerland. The trek is graded as challenging with a number of ascents over 1000m, though we have a built-in rest day mid-way through the trek. We stay in family-run hotels throughout and most nights you have a twin room with a private bathroom. Most dinners and picnics are included.

long distance torres del paine

Torres del Paine Circuit
The distinctive granite tower scenery of Torres del Paine, along with impressive glaciers and bright blue lakes, give a dramatic backdrop to this challenging trek. The highlight of our 14-day round trip from Buenos Aires is a spectacular 9-day trek through stunning scenery, with one rest day. This is a real adventure - we hike between simple mountain refuges, with two nights at basic campsite, with all meals included on the trek. The hiking is challenging with an average of eight hours walking a day, and ascents of up to 900m, so some preparation may be needed. The fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the trek.
