Explore strives to meet increased demand for cycling holidays

To meet a huge surge in demand, cycling holiday specialist Explore, has today increased its cycling offering with a host of extra departures now on sale. Verifying that the popularity of cycling is at an all-time-high, Explore have this month noted a 40% increase in sales, and as a result, is offering an additional 18 departures across a range of its most popular tours.

Proving extremely popular, Explore’s has doubled the amount of departures on offer for its eight day, moderately graded, Southern Oasis cycling tour of Morocco. The tour cycles through kasbahs, tribal villages and oases’, rides camels to a nomad desert camp and explores the rock formations of the Todra Gorge. Travelling in the autumn and winter when temperatures are cooler, the tour costs from £779 per person to include return flights; six nights’ hotel and one night camping accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis; one other meal; bike hire; transport and the services of a tour leader and support vehicle. The tour now has eight departures on offer between March 2013 and February 2014.

Another of its highly demanded tours is its eight day Canal du Midi tour of France. With an additional six departures now on offer, the easy graded cycling tour journeys along the tree-lined towpaths of the Canal du Midi, through the Minervois wine region and on to the Mediterranean coast. Along the way, customers visit the medieval fortress town of Carcassonne and the 12th century cathedral in Narbonne. With a total of 12 departures now on offer between May and October 2013, the tour costs from £905 per person and includes return flights; seven nights’ hotel accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis; bike hire; transport and the services of a tour leader and driver.

Proving an extremely popular long-haul destination for cyclists, Explore has increased the amount of departures on offer for two of its tours to Vietnam. Explore’s 14 day Cycle Saigon to Hanoi tour has four additional departures on offer, bringing the total up to seven. This moderate graded tour journeys along rural backroads and into the highlands. Customers will visit Saigon, Hoi An, Hue and Hanoi along the way, and will have the opportunity to explore the Mekong Delta, relax on the tropical beaches of Nha Trang, and enjoy an overnight cruise along Halong Bay. The tour costs from £1,897 per person and includes return flights; 11 nights’ hotel, one night train and one night junk accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis; three other meals; bike hire; transport and the services of a tour leader, driver and local guides.

In addition to this, Explore have added two extra departures to its 14 day Cycle Vietnam tour which journeys along the backroads between Hanoi, Hue and Old Saigon. Customers will also explore the hidden jungle valley of My son - the ancient capital of the Cham Empire. With six departures now on offer between October 2013 and January 2014, the tour costs from £2,118 per person, to include return flights, 12 nights’ hotel and one night train accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis; three other meals; transport and the services of a tour leader, driver and local guides.

James Adkin, Programme Manager for Explore’s cycling adventures, commented “Over the past few years, people have recognised that they don’t have to be a professional cyclist to enjoy a cycling holiday. Increasing numbers of people are looking to live healthier and greener lifestyles, and for this reason cycling holidays have been growing in popularity. The sudden boom in demand is no doubt down to the hugely successful summer of cycling in 2012 – who couldn’t be inspired by Sir Bradley Wiggins?”

He continued “The great thing about a cycling holiday is that you can really immerse yourself in local culture – you pass through tiny villages that can’t be accessed by bus and get endless opportunities to observe every day scenes and stop and chat to the locals along the way. The bonus of travelling with Explore is that, unlike most other operators, we include bike hire in the cost of the tour. Therefore customers don’t need to add the price of bike hire or taking their bike abroad on to the cost of the tour”.
