Explore expands cycling collection following 62% increase in demand

Following a 62% increase in demand* as a result of the 2012 Games, Explore has launched its 2013/14 Cycling Adventures brochure with ten new tours. With new destinations on offer including the Baltic States, Montenegro, Bosnia Herzegovina and Bhutan, cyclists of all abilities now have a wider range of adventures to choose from. For off-roaders, Explore has expanded its offering with the introduction of new exhilarating dirt track routes in Andalucía and Morocco’s Atlas Mountains. Customers booking one of the new cycling adventures will benefit from a 5% discount, when booking before 19th November, 2012.**

For experienced cyclists looking for something truly unique, Explore’s new cycling tour of Bhutan offers customers a tough but rewarding challenge. The 18-day Tour of the Thunder Dragon journeys to the remote Buddhist Kingdom of Bhutan, home to one of the world’s toughest one day cycling races – the ‘Tour of the Dragon’. Taking-in a mixture of challenging terrains, customers will follow sections of the race route before travelling to Thimpu on day 14 of the itinerary to witness the race itself. The tour also includes two free days in Kathmandu, Nepal, where customers will have the opportunity to explore Durbar Square and Asan Bazaar. Departing in August 2013, the tour costs from £3,847 per person, to include return flights, B&B accommodation, most other meals, transport and the services of a tour leader and support vehicle.

For something equally unique, but more sedate and closer to home, the new nine-day Cycling the Baltic States tour combines Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Graded easy, it cycles through picturesque countryside and coastal towns and customers will have the opportunity to explore national parks, historic castles and quaint fishing villages. With departures from May to September 2013, the tour costs from £1,041 per person. This includes flights, B&B accommodation, bike hire, transport and the services of a tour leader and support vehicle.

For experienced off-roaders, Explore’s new eight-day Mountain Biking in Andalucía tour explores the challenging trails and off-road routes in and around the Parque Natural Sierra de Tejeda and Almijara. At the end of each day, customers will return to the family-run, rustic hotel base in the ‘white village’ of Canillas, where they can enjoy delicious local food and sample the region’s famous sweet wine. The tour, which is graded moderate to challenging, offers fantastic value-for-money and costs from £695 per person, to include return flights, B&B accommodation, bike hire, transport and the services of a tour leader. Departures from May to November 2013.

Another new addition for off-road enthusiasts is Explore’s eight-day High Atlas Traverse. This challenging tour journeys along dirt roads and gravel tracks through North Africa’s highest mountain range, up to an altitude of 2,900 meters.*** For those with less time available, Explore’s new five-day Off Road Atlas Escape cycles through the scenic mountain passes, remote Berber villages and fertile valleys of the Central High Atlas over a long weekend. Reaching an altitude of 2,600 meters, customers face several steep ascents and descents, before ending the tour at the foot of Cathedral Mountain. Graded challenging, the tour, which takes place over most bank holiday weekends between March and September 2013, costs from £779 per person. This includes return flights, B&B accommodation, most other meals, bike hire, transport and the services of a tour leader and support vehicle.

Ashley Toft, Managing Director for Explore, commented “Cycling holidays have been steadily increasing in popularity over the last couple of years, but we saw a sharp rise in bookings correlating directly with the 2012 Games. We expect our expanded collection to appeal to the full spectrum of cyclists – there really is something for everyone.”

He continued, “Not only are our cycling holidays sociable, active and a great way to explore undiscovered areas that most visitors never get to see, but they also represent fantastic value for money. Unlike most other tour operators, we include the hire of high-quality bikes in the cost of all of our trips, meaning that customers don’t have to worry about taking their own bike abroad or paying extra to hire one locally”.
