Guinea Bissau, Taiwan and Colombia’s Lost City feature in Explore’s latest collection

Adventure travel specialist, Explore, has today expanded its product offering with the launch of its 2014/15 collection. With over 80 new tours now on offer in pioneering destinations including Guinea Bissau, Taiwan and Colombia’s Lost City, in addition to a brand new range of food and drink tours across five countries, Explore’s latest portfolio includes some of its most inspiring tours yet. For active types, the operator has launched 19 new walking and trekking, and 12 new cycle tours, alongside 12 new family adventures.

Guinea Bissau, located on the West Coast of Africa, is well off the tourist radar. One of the first major adventure travel companies to offer a small group tour of this unknown country, Explore’s new 12 day Guinea Bissau and the Sacred Bijagos Archipelago tour travels by bus, boat and canoe across savannah, lagoons, rivers, forest, mangroves and the ocean to the tribal villages and islands of this captivating country. Of Guinea Bissau’s 88 islands, only a handful are inhabited, allowing customers to admire prolific birdlife, nesting green turtles and saltwater hippos that have remained undisturbed by humans. Visiting the native tribes who still to this day practice ancestral rituals including initiation ceremonies and mask dances, customers can learn about their cultures and traditions. Departing in November and December 2014, the tour costs from £3,192 per person, to include flights, eco-lodge and camping accommodation, most meals, transport and the services of a tour leader and driver.

A one-of-a-kind offering, Explore’s new Made in Taiwan tour takes in the cultural highlights of this diverse destination. Travelling around the whole island, this 12 day tour explores Taiwan’s history, traditions and natural beauty and visits cities, forts, night markets, waterfalls, lakes and rock formations. Including a range of activities such as walking, cycling and a visit to the hot springs, one night is spent in a Buddhist monastery where customers will spend the following day joining in with chanting and calligraphy lessons. Departing in November and December 2014, the tour costs from £2,995 to include flights, hotel, guest house, bungalow and monastery accommodation, some meals, transport and the services of a tour leader and driver.

Following on from the success of the likes of Rick Stein’s India and Gordon’s Great Escape, Explore is this year bringing together the popular combination of food and travel in India, Turkey, Morocco, Thailand and Vietnam. The new 14 day Taste of India tour combines Tibetan settlements, markets and plantations with interactive cooking demonstrations and cook-offs. Concentrating on Southern India, tour highlights include learning traditional family recipes from Hema Nandi - a member of the Mysore royal family, learning to make momos in a Tibetan settlement and visiting Attumukham Restaurant, as featured in Rick Stein’s India. Costing from £1,319 per person and departing in October, November and December 2014, the tour includes flights, hotels and an over-night train, transport and the services of a tour leader, driver and local guides.

For walkers looking to get well off the beaten track, Explore’s new Trek to the Lost City, graded moderate to challenging, takes a nine day journey through Colombia’s crystal clear rivers, jungle and valleys to the ‘lost city’. Only recently reopened to tourists and reportedly 600 years older than Machu Picchu, this remote destination is only accessible by foot and disappeared off all maps until it was rediscovered in 1975. The tour also explores the historical capital of Bogata, the Gold Museum, and takes a walking tour of Cartagena. The tour departs in April, August, October and November 2014, and costs from £2,299 per person including flights, hotel and camping (hammock) accommodation, most meals, transport and the services of a tour leader and driver.

For cyclists, Explore’s Cycle Jordan offers the chance to discover the country’s highlights on a moderate graded nine day cycle tour. Customers will visit the Dead Sea, explore Petra and spend the night in the desert at the Wadi Rum Bedouin Camp. The tour also includes the chance to rest the bikes and enjoy snorkelling and swimming in the Red Sea. The tour departs in April, May, October, November and December 2014 and costs from £1,346 per person, to include flights, B&B accommodation, one other meal, bike hire, transport and the services of a tour leader, diver and local guides.

Combining gentle activity with culinary delights, Explore’s new Gourmet Cycle to Bordeaux is an eight day easy graded tour cycling through the heart of Tarn-et-Garonne - the market garden of the Midi-Pyrenees, also known locally as the ‘land of a thousand and one flavours’. The tour also includes two evening meals at Michelin listed restaurants, a gourmet picnic by the canal with food selected from the local markets and wine tasting at two local vineyards. The tour departs in April, June, September and October 2014, and costs from £1,199 per person to include train travel from the UK, B&B accommodation, three other meals, bike hire, transport and the services of a tour leader and driver.

For families looking for something a bit unusual, Explore is introducing Latvia, Belize, Canada and Malta to its families collection. The new eight day Family Adventure in Latvia, costing from £847 per adult and £778 per child*, combines adventure, activity and relaxation, and includes rafting and kayaking on the Gauja River; tobogganing, wall climbing and high rope challenges at the biggest open air adventure park in the Baltics and entry to the Secret Soviet Bunker.
