Today, adventure travel specialist Explore has launched its Polar programme for 2018, featuring three brand new trips. Book before 29 December to save 25% on selected 2018 departures.

Brand new to Explore for 2018, The Northwest Passage is a 14-day trip that cut through the remote Arctic regions of North America. Travelling from Kangerlussuaq in Western Greenland to Montreal (or in reverse) you’ll visit the stunning Ilullissat icefjord, cross the Davis Strait and visit the traditional Inuit community on the northern tip of Baffin Island. Venture further into the Canadian arctic and see polar bears roaming the tundra as well as small populations of Arctic hare and musk ox. Cross the Victoria Strait and explore Connigham Bay before continuing through the James Ross Strait, with plenty of shore landings, and arriving into the heart of the Northwest Passage. Rich in wildlife and history, this area played an important part in the history of early explorers to this region. From £9,025 per person, voyage only, aboard M/S Fram.

Patagonia to Antarctica is a 19-day trip that combines Cape Horn, the Chilean Fjords and the rich and varied wildlife of Patagonia with the wonders of Antarctica. Starting in the wine region of Valparaiso, sail south through Patagonia and onwards to the southern province of Ultima Esperanza, meaning Last Hope. Visit the world-renowned Torres del Paine National Park before continuing into open waters and attempting a landing on Cape Horn. Spend four days exploring the white wilderness of Antarctica, travelling ashore aboard sturdy Polarcirckel boats and exploring various penguin rookeries and bays on the peninsula, before heading north across the Drake Passage to Ushuaia. 19 days from £6,899 per person, voyage only, aboard M/S Fram.

Cruise the Norwegian Fjords in Depth is a new, extended 11-day trip for Explore that travels into the glaciers and impressive fjordscapes of the Norwegian coast.  Setting off from Tromso, explore the barren landscapes and quaint fishing villages of Nordkapp before setting off for Trollfjord, taking in incredible Arctic scenery and marine wildlife en route. Explore some of the highlights of the Lofoten Islands by coach before visiting the beautiful glacier of Svartisen and picturesque Vega Island. Continue along the rugged coastline, making regular landings on approach to the modern city of Trondheim, surrounded by beautiful forests and mountains, before sailing into the beautiful Geirangerfjord, a 15-km long fjord surrounded by spectacular mountains, lush green trees and waterfalls. 11 days from £2,699 per person, voyage only, aboard Expedition.
Save 25% on selected 2018 departures of The Northwest Passage, Patagonia to Antarctica and Cruise the Norwegian Fjords in Depth when you book before 29 December.

When to Travel – Antarctica

  • In November, pack ice is breaking up, and the birds are mating – sometimes displaying with elaborate courtship rituals
  • In December and January, penguin chicks hatch and seal pups are born. The long days in December create longer daylight hours and the opportunity for midnight photography
  • In February and March, various whale species gather. With less sea ice, you can head deeper into Antarctica on the most adventurous voyages.
When to travel – Arctic
  • 24-hour daylight is experienced from April to August, allowing you to make the most of every minute on board
  • If you travel early in the season, you’re likely to see more ice – a stunning frozen wilderness
  • Travelling late July or early August gives you the best chance of circumnavigating Spitsbergen, as the ice starts to break up

On all of Explore’s polar voyages, the aim is maximise time spent off the ship, seeing amazing landscapes and wildlife up-close.
