Earth Day 2014 - here’s what we got up to

Every year on 22nd April, over a billion people in 190 different countries take action for Earth Day. Earth Day marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement, and people from across the world come together to do what they can for the planet. From San Francisco to San Juan and Moscow to Marrakesh, people plant trees, clean up their communities, contact their elected officials, and much much more.

Here at Explore, we like to think we already do a lot for the planet in which we love to travel. But we’re always up for doing more. In the name of Earth Day, we got our thinking caps on to see what little extras we could do to mark the occasion. Here’s just a taster of what we got up to...

  • Staff at our head office in Farnborough left their cars behind for the day and commuted to the office by any other means. Staff walked, ran, cycled, caught the train and commuted by bus in an effort to get to the office by any means but car, reducing their carbon emissions in the process
  • Our groups on cycle tours in France picked up litter along the way
  • In Mallorca our staff on the ground cleared local beaches and implemented a ‘Keep Mallorca Tidy’ campaign which they’re still working on now - great effort team!
  • Our groups in Italy walked on their free day instead of using transport
  • In Greece our staff undertook a clear up on Evia Island and signposted ancient mountain trails using recycled materials
  • Our groups in Peru spent half a day litter picking and enjoyed an evening meal by candlelight - an easy but effective way to save on electricity as well as on money
  • Our staff in Brazil planted trees and educated people in their local villages on the importance of preserving the environment
  • Our staff trekking in Colombia litter picked along the way
  • In Costa Rica our groups attended a special lecture on global warming while our staff were planting trees

Earth day article

These are just a few of the things we got up to and all in all, we think it was a great effort all round. If you did anything special in the name of Earth Day we’d love to hear about it. Please let us know what you did through Facebook, or tweet us at @Explore_Chat.

Time to get planning for Earth Day 2015...
