Meet Pip Baines our Trade Sales Manager

Hi I'm Pip, keep an eye here every month for my regular 'Pip's Post' with info on what I've been up to and where I've been! This month, I share my experience of my first ever Explore tour.

I was so excited about travelling on my first Explore tour however the prospect of being in the company of 'strangers' the entire time was a little daunting especially as I was travelling alone.

There were 17 on my tour between the ages of 17 and 74, all with different interests, backgrounds and personalities. Understandably,  I was pretty curious to see how the 'group dynamic' would work with such a diverse bunch!

Despite my concerns; Will we get on? What will we talk about? What, (if anything) will we have in common?

The reality was that I was holidaying with a fantastic group of people who share a love of 'real' travel - not as 'tourists' but as travellers - people who seek adventure and want more than a basic itinerary or beach stay.

Many had already travelled extensively with Explore and almost immediately upon meeting there was chatter of previous tours and talks of their next adventure.

This common interest alone was the perfect basis on which to develop solid friendships plus the unique experiences we shared as a group cemented the bond between us and I loved the camaraderie this brought. Encouraging Jane to overcome her fear of heights on a hot air balloon ride was just one of those moments. (As was the party on the flight home - although I don't think BA enjoyed it quite as much! I think they're still restocking the miniatures!)

A year later and we're all still in touch! (Even Jane!)  We organised a reunion weekend back in February which has now become an annual event and we're always asking each other (and boasting) about our Explore tours - between us all, we have quite a few covered!

The group in Turkey and back in the UK

As a solo traveller Explore trips are ideal as you can travel independently, safe in the knowledge that you are with an organised group who share the same love of travel with a dedicated, knowledgeable tour leader to guide you.

It's a unique and memorable experience and you will definitely make lots of new friendships along the way. For more info, check out our FAQ on solo travel.
