Driving into the hills just a short distance out of the capital, we'll head out this morning to visit the majestic Norman Cathedral of Monreale. Founded in 1174 by William the Good, the cathedral is also famous for its extensive mosaics, as well as its beautiful cloisters showing both Romanesque and Islamic influences. We'll have free time here for lunch and enjoy its picturesque streets and squares, as well as lovely views of the surrounding countryside. The town has a charming, old-world atmosphere and is a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of Palermo.
After lunch, we'll make the short drive to our Masseria, a traditional farmhouse set within a vast agricultural estate, where we'll spend the night. We arrive mid-afternoon and have time to settle into our rooms.
Later, we'll head out for a leisurely walk through the vineyard. Here, we'll meet Vincenzo, who will share his deep knowledge of the estate, explaining how the vines are cared for, the grape varieties grown, and the cultivation methods used. The estate, certified organic since May 2025, proudly reflects a strong commitment to sustainable farming. Vincenzo will also introduce the wines produced from each grape variety, offering insight into the character of the land.
Our walk continues to the vegetable garden, where Giusy or Giovanna will guide us through the seasonal produce grown on the farm. You'll learn how these ingredients play a central role in the kitchen, moving directly from garden to table and shaping the authentic flavours of the dishes served at the agriturismo.
In the late afternoon, we'll gather in the restaurant dining room for a hands-on cooking class dedicated to Sicily's most beloved sweets. Under the expert guidance of Chef Giorgio Marino, you'll learn how to prepare traditional cassatelle or cannoli from scratch, discovering techniques and secrets that bring these iconic desserts to life.
After some free time to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings, we'll reconvene in the evening for dinner, a delightful moment to unwind and savour the estate's fresh, locally inspired cuisine.
Our agriturismo has a swimming pool to cool off in, however, it's only open during high season, between the end of May and the end of September. It can also sporadically be closed due to weather conditions. A single room is not available for this particular night of the trip. For all other nights, single rooms will be provided as booked. On this night, at the agriturismo, solo travellers will be accommodated in shared rooms with fellow guests of the same sex, with a maximum of four people per room. Each room has its own private bathroom. The setting is beautiful, and the experience of staying in this authentic rural accommodation is truly special, well worth the one-night compromise of sharing with fellow travellers.
