On our Barcelona to Bilbao tour we spend five nights in premium-grade hotels and three nights in comfortable- grade hotels.
Accommodation in Spain is generally good and you can expect to have all of the usual amenities. We stay in single and twin rooms equipped with air conditioning, WiFi and en suite bathrooms. Some hotels will have extra amenities such as a restaurant or bar or a swimming pool. Please see your final documents for your departure's confirmed accommodation.

Is this the trip for you?

  • We've graded our tour of Spain as moderate and we'll be moving at a fast pace to pack in the highlights. Expect a busy itinerary and a few long drives, balanced with downtime to explore solo or relax.
  • We will be travelling between destinations by private coach. From the inspiring Guggenheim to the Gothic architecture of Barcelona, we'll be doing a considerable amount of walking so comfortable shoes are key, as is carrying water at all times.
  • We offer this itinerary from Bilbao to Barcelona and Barcelona to Bilbao, with only the accommodation on the two nights around the eclipse differing.
  • While we have selected a good viewing location for the eclipse, clear skies and good weather are required for the best experience. Like any natural event, these elements cannot be guaranteed.
  • You should also be aware that the Spanish authorities are expecting people to turn out in huge numbers to view the ecipse. As such many viewing areas will be busy, and some flexibility is required during this day.

Weather

Spain

Overall, spring, early summer and autumn are ideal times for a Spanish trip - though the weather varies enormously from region to region. The high central plains suffer from fierce extremes, stiflingly hot in summer, bitterly cold and swept by freezing winds in winter. The Atlantic coast, in contrast, has a tendency to damp and mist, and a relatively brief, humid summer. The Mediterranean south is warm virtually all year round. Spain's Islands, the Canaries and Balaerics, experience very mild winters and warm summers, making them ideal year round destinations.

Single-room arrangements

A single-room option is available for every night of this itinerary. Subject to availability for your departure. A single-room supplement applies.

Budgeting & packing

Budgeting

Optional activities

San Sebastian - Funicular 3 Euros
Barcelona - Gaudi, Sagrada Familia. The official site is www.sagradafamilia-tickets.org. To ensure you are finished in time for the paella cooking class, we recommend a slot no later than 3pm.
If over 65 years of age, it is worth carrying a colour photocopy of your passport as many sites give reduced entrance fees.

Tipping guidance

Local crew

Although voluntary, tipping is a recognised part of life in this region of the world. Some local staff will look to members of the group for personal recognition of particular services provided. Accordingly, you should allow approximately £20 of local currency for tipping. In order to make things easier for you, the Explore Leader may organise a group's tips kitty and if this is the case, they will account for it throughout the trip.

Tour leader

Tipping isn't compulsory, and we work hard to ensure that our leaders all receive a fair wage. You may however, want to recognise a leader that has done a great job or really added to your trip by giving them a tip. We're often asked about the recommended amount. It is a tricky one, and down to personal preference, but we would recommend £25 to £30 per person per week as a guideline.

Currency & payment

Spain

Currency: Euro (EUR)

We recommend you take the majority of your spending money in Euros cash.

Where to change: We recommend that you change any currency into Euros prior to arrival. Currency Exchange locations are generally only found in major cities and large airports.

ATMs: In cities and most major towns.

Card notes: Visa and Mastercard are generally accepted in larger restaurants and some shops.

Credit cards accepted: No

Water information

Spain

It is generally possible to drink the local tap water in mainland Spain, therefore to reduce the need for single-use plastic bottles we recommend you bring a refillable water bottle with you. Your leader will advise you on refill points each day. Tap water on the Canary Islands goes through a desalination process and so, whilst safe, is not always pleasant to the taste.
