Walking and Trekking Trips in Bulgaria

Some of the finest walking and trekking in Bulgaria can be found in the spectacular but little visited Rodopi Mountains, which form part of the border with Greece. The Rodopi Mountains are Bulgaria’s most extensive mountain range and are famous for their dramatic Karst scenery, with deep river gorges, rocky pinnacles and vast, echoing caves. A number of beautiful but little-known trekking routes criss-cross this region, taking hikers through a range of landscapes including mature forests, alpine pastures and sheer-sided limestone gorges. Walking in Bulgaria can be enjoyed in summer and winter, swopping hiking boots for snowshoes in the winter months.

Life in these mountains has barely changed over the generations, with local farmers working the fields by hand and tending their flocks on the flower-filled upland meadows. Trekkers can stay in family-run guesthouses and experience welcoming local hospitality, coming home with an insight into a way of life all but lost in Western Europe.
