Jordan is fast becoming recognised as an ideal winter trekking destination, with warm, sunny weather between October and April. Two of the county’s main attractions, the dramatic desert landscapes of Wadi Rum and the striking ancient rock-cut city of Petra, are both excellent for trekking and best appreciated on foot.

To walk across the copper sands and among the echoing granite cliffs of Wadi Rum is truly magical: you feel the grandeur and scale of the landscape in a way that’s just not possible in a vehicle. Exploring the ‘rose red city’ of Petra on foot is equally rewarding: the enormous site is spread over many kilometres in a maze of canyons and pink sandstone massifs. Only by trekking can you follow the ancient footpaths and stairways cut into sheer rock by the Nabatean traders two millennia ago.

At the end of each trekking day you can unwind in a desert camp, sited in the most beautiful locations protected from the wind by dunes or towering cliffs. Bedouin camp crew prepare freshly cooked meals as the sun sets over the desert and the clear night sky fills with a blanket of stars.
