From the brown bears of Finland to the rich birdlife of the Scottish isles and Svalbard’s magnificent wildlife, Europe is home to some of the world’s most inspiring animals and birds. Whether joining a flexible, small group wildlife holiday or one of our Polar voyages, there are plenty of choices for wildlife enthusiasts.
You can stay out overnight in a bear hide amongst the pristine forests in northern Finland, close to the Russian border, watching for brown bear, wolverine, fox and elk. Or during the summer months you can observe brown bears in Romania, from our forest hide close to Bran Castle, as they come out to feed.
For a different wildlife experience altogether you could join a trip to the magnificent Vesteralen Islands off the coast of Norway. This is one of the best places in the world to watch whales, with sperm whales, pilot whales, humpbacks, minkes and orcas plying the waters offshore. You will also see marine mammals including seals and birdlife such as puffins, shags, cormorants, guillemots and white tailed eagles. With up to 20,000 individuals, the puffin colony here is one of the largest in Norway.
On the northern shores of the British Isles, among the cliffs and coves of the Scottish islands, huge seabird colonies can also be observed, either by boat or from the cliff-tops.
Further north in the Polar archipelago of Svalbard you can find one of Europe’s richest eco-systems for marine mammals – with large populations of whales, dolphins, seals and walruses. This is also the realm of the majestic Polar bear, along with other mammal species including the Arctic fox and Svalbard reindeer, as well as bird species such as little auk, kittiwake, northern fulmar and the Arctic skua.
